Tyler loves trains.

When he got the chance to take an Amtrak train to California and visit Universal Studios, he jumped at it.

Tyler, who is supported through one of Albertina Kerr’s adult group homes, recently turned a longtime dream into reality. As he boarded the train to begin an adventure he had been looking forward to for years, he could hardly contain his excitement.

“I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming,” he said. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

The train ride itself was a highlight. Tyler loved tracking the trip on the map, always knowing where the train was and what lay ahead. Kerr staff supported Tyler in planning the adventure, and Kerr Direct Support Professional Shannon Tupikov accompanied him on the trip.

“He kept saying he couldn’t believe it was really happening,” Shannon said.

When they arrived at Universal Studios, Tyler’s excitement grew even more. He loved riding the Transformers attraction and was especially excited to see a replica of the iconic car from the Fast & Furious movies.

The trip included several firsts. It was Tyler’s first train adventure as an adult and his first visit to Universal Studios. He took in the sights, enjoyed the rides, and made memories he’ll be talking about for years.

The only disappointment came when bad weather forced a train reroute, preventing Tyler from seeing the Big Boy steam locomotive he had hoped to visit. Even so, it did little to dampen his enthusiasm for the trip.

Experiences like these reflect what self-determined living looks like in practice. For Tyler, it was the chance to follow a passion, explore somewhere new, and create memories that will last for years to come.

And he’s already looking ahead to the next destination: Disneyland.
