It started with a conversation. Two adults supported in Albertina Kerr group homes began thinking about a trip to Florida. Kerr staff helped them sort through the details, where to go, what to do, and how to make it happen. From there, the decision was theirs.

They decided to go! They planned and paid for the trip themselves, including the cost for three staff to travel with them. Kerr covered staff meals.

Getting there went smoothly. The group used TSA Cares, a passenger support program that made the airport experience easier by providing support from security to the gate.

And then the week began. They ate out, explored two parks at Walt Disney World, and spent time at Universal Studios Florida. They tried rides they hadn’t been on before, took plenty of photos, and spent their days doing what they wanted. Some of the best moments included communicating with the characters in American Sign Language (ASL). And on the rides, it was the same thing every time: big smiles.

There were a few minor challenges, but they didn’t detract from the experience. What stood out was how much they enjoyed being part of it, making choices, trying new things, and spending time as they wanted.

This wasn’t their first adventure. Last year, they traveled outside of Oregon for the first time, visiting Universal Studios Hollywood and Disneyland Park. Soon after, they took another trip to San Diego. Each trip made them more confident for the next.

“We made memories that they will remember forever,” said Kerr Program Manager II Maria Arellano, “I like to make things happen for the guys. They need to explore the world just like everyone else. If I can make the next trip happen, I will.”

They’re already thinking about what’s next. Maybe Mexico.
