Albertina Kerr recently celebrated the graduation of six interns from our City of Salem Project SEARCH program! Over the past nine months, these adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) gained hands-on experience, developed transferable skills, and explored diverse roles in departments such as the Salem Fire Department, Salem Public Library, Salem Housing Authority, and Public Works.

Through this nationally acclaimed internship program, the interns discovered their strengths, built confidence, and prepared for the next steps toward competitive, integrated employment.

At the graduation event, they shared presentations reflecting on their journey and accomplishments.

“This program has changed my life. It helped me build skills and gain confidence,” said Duane.

“This program has been a life-changer for me,” Erika shared.

“I learned a lot about myself and the inner workings of the city,” Aaron added.

Project SEARCH is more than just an internship—it’s a transformative experience and a pathway to independence and success. We are incredibly proud of these interns and deeply grateful to the City of Salem for their partnership in empowering individuals with I/DD to lead self-determined lives.

Congratulations, graduates! Your future is bright, and we’re excited to see what you accomplish next.
